Essential Early Literacy Courses

Introduction:

As requested, Michigan Virtual has recently enrolled multiple learners in Essential Early Literacy courses within the Professional Learning Portal (PLP). Learners were sent an email containing information about the course and a link to the PLP. This document describes how to access the dashboard and course content.

Details:

  1. First, select the link to access the Professional Learning Portal.
  2. Next, access the dashboard by following the Login instructions.
  3. As a result, one or more Essential Early Literacy courses will appear in the "Active Courses" module.
The Essential Instructional Practices in Early Literacy: K-3 Essential 1 course appears as a tile within the Active Courses module on the user dashboard. An arrow points to this tile.
  4. At this point, tap the appropriate linked course name to open the content in a new window. Then begin the course by selecting Getting Started within the left navigation menu and tapping the first linked topic name.
The Getting Started page is shown with directions and welcome information. Arrows point to the "Getting Started" option on the left menu and to the first linked topic below the Getting Started Introduction paragraph.
  5. Continue to the next topic by tapping the next button at the top or bottom of the page.
An Image of the topic item titled "Introduction to the Early Literacy Essentials Modules" is shown with an arrow pointing to the Previous and Next buttons shown at the top of the page.
  6. When navigating the course, links contain a descriptive text to explain the type of link being selected. Links can be either a “Web Page”, “Assignment”, “Content Object”, “PDF Document” or “Word Document”. Links that display “Content Object”, will open in a new window.
Note: A message may appear, select Review Content to simply examine work completed, or select Retake Content to repeat the attempt at completing the course. If pop-up blockers are enabled, this window may not open. Pop-ups must be allowed to access content.
Message reads: It looks like you have previously viewed this content. If you choose to Review, no grades will be altered. If you choose to retake your previous grade may change to the newest one. There are two buttons below, Review Content and Retake Content. If you are returning another message may appear that states “Would you like to resume where you left off?” Tap the Yes or No button as appropriate. When you are completed with viewing the materials the only way to return to the course content is to close the window.
The Chrome browser is showing three tabs. The third tab is the Literacy Essentials webpage. An arrow points to the X within the tab for the purpose of showing how to close it.
  7. Once the course has been finished, learners can view or print the Completion Certificate.

Additional Information:

Learners who are registered for more than one course can toggle between courses using the waffle icon at the top of the page.
An image of the course selector (waffle grid shaped icon) is shown with an arrow pointing to it on the Course Navigation Page. Another arrow points to the course options available.

For learners who would like to reference the material from completed sections of Essential Early Literacy Courses, or those that help facilitate the courses for their districts may enroll in Early Literacy Resources. Doing so will make the content of any completed section available for a year. If you are currently enrolled in an Essential Early Literacy Course you can go to the conclusion portion of your course and use the link provided to self enroll in the resources course. If you are not currently enrolled in any Essentials courses please reach out to customer care to be enrolled.
The Continue Your Learning with the Early Literacy Resources Course section is shown with an arrow pointing to "Click here for the Early Literacy Resources Course" link.
