Understanding Assignments in Brightspace

Intended Audience: Students

About

This guide helps students understand how to access, complete, and review assignments in their Brightspace courses. It also explains how students can view feedback from instructors after assignments are graded.

Instruction

Accessing an Assignment

  • From the Lessons page, expand the desired unit or module by clicking the title.
  • Within the expanded content, select the assignment name to open it.

Example: An arrow will appear next to the assignment name (e.g., "Untitled Assignment") once it is selected.
The Lessons page shows a unit expanded and an arrow points to the Untitled assignment.

Reviewing Assignment Instructions

  • After opening an assignment, carefully read the "Instructions" section at the top of the page.
  • This section provides important information about the assignment’s goals, expectations, and requirements.

    • Attach a file from the student's computer or device.
    • Accepted file types: PDF, DOC, or DOCX.

    • Use the built-in tool to record a video or audio response.
    • Time limit: 3 minutes or less.
  • Choose Existing
    • Attach a file from previously saved notes or files within Brightspace.

Tip: Students should ensure that their file format and size meet the listed requirements before submitting.
The Assignment is open with no submissions. The page shows the Upload, Record and Choose Existing buttons.

Viewing Assignment Feedback

  • Once the instructor has reviewed and graded the assignment, a "Feedback" section will appear below the Submissions section.
  • Comments, grades, and attached feedback files (if any) will be visible here.

To see an overview of feedback across all assignments, students can also use the My Progress tool within Brightspace.
