Brightspace CI: Accommodated Quizzes

Intended Audience: Collaborative Instructors
This article pertains to courses taught by a local teacher as part of a collaborative partnership.

Introduction:

Brightspace courses may include accommodated versions of assessments. These accommodated assessments are modified to reduce the number of answer choices provided in multiple-choice questions. They are designed to assist instructors in providing the necessary accommodation of reduced answer choices, as specified in a student's IEP or 504 Plan. To establish and manage accommodated assessments in a course, instructors should follow the documented steps below.

Details:

Step 1: Adding Students to the Accommodations Group

To add students to the MC Accommodations Group, follow these steps:

  1. First, open the course in Brightspace.
  2. Next, select Course Admin from the navigation bar and then choose Groups located in the "Learner Management" section.
  3. Then select "Enroll Users" from the MC Accommodations drop-down.
  4.  Next, locate the student(s) and place a check in the "MC Accommodation" column and then tap the Save button.

Step 2: Supporting Students with Accommodated Assessments in Brightspace

Once a student is added to the MC Accommodation Group, they will have access to all accommodated versions of assessments in the course, as well as the unmodified versions. Students may need guidance in selecting the appropriate version initially. To access the accommodated version, the student needs to select the AV-MC3 version from the list.

To confirm that they are accessing the accommodated version, the student should see "(AV-MC3)" in the quiz title at the top of the page.

Step 3: Grading Accommodated Assessments

To access grades for accommodated assessments, you can navigate to the gradebook and scroll to the right, past all the standard graded items for the course. Accommodated assessments can be identified by the (AV-MC3) notation added to the title. However, it is important to note that grades for accommodated assessments will not be included in the final grade for the course. If you want to include them, you will need to manually copy the score earned on the accommodated version of the assessment and enter it into the corresponding column of the non-accommodated version of the assessment in the gradebook.

To grade accommodated assessments, follow these steps:

  1. First, copy the score earned on the accommodated version of the assessment and manually enter that score in the corresponding column of the non-accommodated version of the assessment in the gradebook.
  2. Next, view the gradebook in Spreadsheet View, enter the score in the appropriate spot, and tap Save.
