Brightspace CI: Exempting Students from Assignments

Intended Audience: Collaborative Instructors
This article pertains to courses taught by a local teacher as part of a collaborative partnership.

About

The Brightspace Gradebook offers instructors the ability to exempt students from specific assignments, which will then be excluded from the calculation of their final grade. To exempt a student from multiple assignments or units within a course, follow the steps outlined below.

Instruction

  1. First, from your Brightspace course, go to the Grades page.
  2. Next, locate the student you want to exempt assignments for and click the drop-down menu next to their name and then choose Bulk Edit Exemptions.
The Grades page is shown with a list of Students in a table. Arrows point to the Grades tab at the top of the page, to the student name drop-down menu and to the Bulk Edit Exemptions option within.
  3. At this point select all assignments that you want to exempt the student from.
Note: You can select assignments individually or in bulk using the Select/Unselect All button for each unit.
  4. Finally, click Save and Close to apply changes.
The Edit Grade Exemptions for an Example Student page is shown with an arrow pointing to the Exempt column of the graded item list. Another arrow points to the Save and Close button at the bottom of the page.

Once assignments are exempted in the Brightspace Gradebook, they will be visible in the student's SLP Gradebook, but these exempted assignments will not impact the student's overall score.
