Brightspace CI: IEP and 504 Bulk Accommodations

Intended Audience: Collaborative Instructors
This article pertains to courses taught by local teachers as part of a collaborative partnership.

About

For instructors teaching courses through the Collaborative model, Brightspace provides options to apply accommodations for students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan. One such option is the ability to implement accommodations that will be effective across all quizzes within the course.

This bulk accommodations feature allows you to modify the time limit for quizzes to accommodate the needs of specific students. However, it's important to note that this article is specifically intended for Collaborative instructors, as Michigan Virtual instructors do not have the same permissions and cannot access the Edit Accommodations feature within Brightspace.

Instruction

  1. First, within the Brightspace course, navigate to the Course Admin page and then select Classlist.
  2. Next, locate the student for whom accommodations need to be applied. Tap the drop-down menu adjacent to their name and select Edit Accommodations.

  3. Then change the time limit by checking the box next to Modify Time Limit and enter either:
    • a multiplier, or
    • the number of extra minutes allowed on the quiz.
  4. At this point, click the Save button to apply the changes.
When students have accommodations set, a gear icon will appear next to their name on the "Classlist" page and the will apply to the student on all quizzes throughout the entire course.
An image of the Learner is shown with an arrow pointing to the icon which appears as a gear behind a profile image.

By utilizing this functionality, Collaborative instructors can efficiently provide consistent testing accommodations for students with IEPs or 504 Plans, ensuring equitable access and support throughout the course assessments.
