Brightspace CI: Exempting Multiple Students from a Single Assignment

Intended Audience: Collaborative Instructors
This article pertains to courses taught by local teachers as part of a collaborative partnership.

About

The Brightspace Gradebook allows instructors to exempt multiple students from a specific assignment, ensuring that the assignment is excluded from the calculation of their final course grade. To exempt several students from the same assignment, follow the steps outlined below.

Instruction

  1. First, from your Brightspace course, go to the Grades page.
  2. Next, scroll to the assignment you want to exempt students from, click the drop-down menu next to the assignment name and then choose Enter Grades.
The Grades page is shown with the table scrolled to the right. Arrows point to the Grades option within the top menu bar and to the assignment drop-down menu option Enter Grades.
  3. Then select the checkbox next to each student’s name that you want to exempt from the assignment and then click Exempt from the options above the table.
The Grade Item page is shown with a table listing students. Arrows point to the select, checkbox, column and to the Exempt button above the table.
  4. Finally, click Save and Close to apply the changes.

Please note that while exempted assignments will still be visible in each student's Student Learning Portal (SLP) Gradebook, they will not contribute to the overall score calculation. This provides instructors with flexibility in tailoring grade calculations based on individual student circumstances or needs within the course.
