Exempt a Student from Multiple Assignments or Units in Bulk

Intended Audience: Collaborative Instructors
This article pertains to courses taught by a local teacher as part of a collaborative partnership.

Introduction:

In the Brightspace Gradebook, instructors have the option to exempt students from certain assignments. When you exempt a student from an assignment, it is excluded from their final grade in the course. To exempt a student from multiple assignments or units in the course, follow the steps below.

Details:

  1. First, from your Brightspace course, go to the Grades page.
  2. Next, locate the student you want to exempt assignments for and click the drop-down menu next to their name and then choose Bulk Edit Exemptions.
The Grades page is shown with a list of Students in a table. Arrows point to the Grades tab at the top of the page, to the student name drop-down menu and to the Bulk Edit Exemptions option within.
  3. At this point select all assignments that you want to exempt the student from.
Note: You can select assignments individually or in bulk using the Select/Unselect All button for each unit.
  4. Finally, click Save and Close to apply changes.
The Edit Grade Exemptions for an Example Student page is shown with an arrow pointing to the Exempt column of the graded item list. Another arrow points to the Save and Close button at the bottom of the page.

Additional Information:

Exemptions in the Grade Book: Assignments that have been exempt in the Brightspace grade book will show up in a student's SLP grade book. However, they will not count towards a student's score. For more information on how students can view exemptions, see View Exempt Grade.
