Exempt Multiple Students from an Assignment

Intended Audience: Collaborative Instructors
This article pertains to courses taught by local teachers as part of a collaborative partnership.

Introduction:

In the Brightspace Gradebook, instructors have the option to exempt students from certain assignments. When you exempt a student from an assignment, it is excluded from their final grade in the course. To exempt multiple students from the same assignment in the course, follow the steps below.

Details:

  1. First, from your Brightspace course, go to the Grades page.
  2. Next, scroll to the assignment you want to exempt students from, click the drop-down menu next to the assignment name and then choose Enter Grades.
The Grades page is shown with the table scrolled to the right. Arrows point to the Grades option within the top menu bar and to the assignment drop-down menu option Enter Grades.
  3. Then select the checkbox next to each student’s name that you want to exempt from the assignment and then click Exempt from the options above the table.
The Grade Item page is shown with a table listing students. Arrows point to the select, checkbox, column and to the Exempt button above the table.
  4. Finally, click Save and Close to apply the changes.

Additional Information:

Exemptions in the Gradebook: Assignments that have been exempt in the Brightspace grade book will show up in a students SLP Gradebook. However, they will not count towards a students score. For more information on how students can view exemptions, see View Exempt Grade.
