Allow Students Special Access to Apply IEP and 504 Accommodations

Intended Audience: Collaborative Instructors
This article pertains to courses taught by a local teacher as part of a collaborative partnership

Introduction:

In Brightspace, courses taught by local teachers have a couple of options for applying accommodations for students that have an IEP or 504 Plan. One way is to allow users special access to a quiz and then adjust the time and/or attempt settings. To grant students special access, follow the steps below.

Details:

  1. First, access your Brightspace course and then tap the Quizzes tab.
  2. Next, locate the quiz that you need to apply accommodations, tap the drop-down menu next to the quiz name and then select Edit.
  3. Then tap the Restrictions tab and scroll down to the Special Access section.
  4. Next, confirm that Allow selected users special access to this quiz is selected and tap the Add Users to Special Access button.
The Special Access section is shown with arrows pointing to the Type of Access option "Allow selected users special access to this quiz" and to the Add Users to Special Access button.
  5. At this point, make desired changes to the quiz settings. You have the following options to choose from:
    • Change due date and/or availability
    • Adjust the time limit
      • Recommended Time Limit - A time limit will be displayed to the student, but not enforced.
      • Enforced Time Limit - The available options are to set a new time limit for the quiz, multiply the default time limit by a multiplier, or add additional minutes to the time limit. You can also assign an alternative grace period for after the time limit has been exceeded and make decisions about what you want to happen once the time limit has been exceeded.
    • Change the number of attempts allowed
      • Click Override attempts allowed and choose a specific number of attempts or unlimited attempts. Then click Apply. If you have chosen between 2-10 attempts, some additional options can be set so that the additional attempt is only available if certain criteria have been met.
The Attempts section is shown with Override attempts allowed checkbox selected as well as the number 2 selected for attempts allowed. Arrows point to these two boxes and to the Apply button. Below the Advanced Attempts Conditions appear.
  6. Finally, select the students that you wish to apply the new quiz settings for by checking the box next to their name and then tap the Add Special Access button.
