Understanding Course Start and End Dates

Intended Audience: Students, Guardians

About

This guide helps students learn how to check the official start and end dates of their Michigan Virtual course using the Student Learning Portal (SLP). Knowing these dates is important for staying on track and ensuring that all assignments are completed on time.

Each course may have different start and end dates, even if multiple courses are taken during the same school term. The end date is especially important, as students will lose access to the course—including any remaining assignments or activities—once that date has passed.

Instruction

  1. After logging into the Student Learning Portal (SLP), select the Gradebook option from the left-hand navigation menu.
  2. The Gradebook page will display a table at the top. This table includes key information for each course, such as:
    • Start Date – the first day the student can access course content and begin coursework.
    • End Date – the final day the student can view or submit assignments in the course.
The Gradebook page is shown with a list of courses. An arrow points to the Start and End columns in a table containing Student course(s).Note: Course access will automatically end at 11:59 p.m. on the date listed in the End Date column. After this time, the course will no longer be visible, and any unfinished work will not be accepted.

Why These Dates Matter

  • The Start Date lets students know when they can begin working in the course.
  • The End Date is the deadline for all coursework, including assignments, quizzes, and projects.
  • Submitting work on time is essential, as instructors are not able to grant access beyond the official course end date unless a formal extension is approved.

Need Help?

If a student is unsure about their course schedule or believes an extension may be needed due to special circumstances, they should speak with their mentor, school counselor, or instructor for additional support.

Important: Course Extensions may only be granted under certain conditions and are not automatically available.
