Intended Audience: Mentors
About
The Progress Checks Dashboard within Brightspace’s Insights Portal offers mentors a valuable view into student performance across Michigan Virtual courses. This dashboard displays key gradebook information, including progress checks, student activity, and grade activity.
Mentors can apply filters to focus on specific terms, courses, or students. For the best experience when reviewing or sharing the report, it is recommended to download it as a CSV or Excel file, as these formats preserve shading and formatting, especially for larger datasets.

Understanding Dashboard Columns
- Student Activity: Shows the most recent timestamp when a student submitted, posted, or completed an item.
- Grade Activity: Displays the last time a grade was updated or entered for that item.
- Points Earned (Blank with Grade Activity): Some interactions (such as instructor feedback) may result in grade activity but not an actual score.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there no Student Activity for some graded items?
This may occur if the item doesn't require student submission (e.g., a conversation assignment graded manually). It can also occur for grades entered through LTI tools, where system activity timestamps are not always recorded.
What is the difference between Student Activity and Grade Activity?
Student Activity refers to when a student last interacted with or submitted the item. Grade Activity refers to the most recent update made to the grade for that item.
Why is Points Earned blank even though there is Grade Activity?
Not all activity results in a score. For instance, written feedback or comments can show up as grade activity without impacting the grade itself.
Why are Progress Checks missing for a course?
Progress checks are calculated fields based on assignment grades. If no assignments have been graded for a student, the progress check may not appear. Once at least one graded assignment is submitted, the data will populate.
