Intended Audience: Guardians

Welcome to Michigan Virtual! This guide is designed to help guardians understand how to support students effectively. The level of support expected from a guardian depends on how the student is enrolled: through homeschool enrollment or school-based enrollment.

Who Registers the Student?
The guardian registers the student and pays for the course directly through the Student Learning Portal.
Who Registers the Student?
The school or district enrolls the student in a Michigan Virtual course.
Will the guardian need to create an account?
Yes. The guardian will need to create an account for themselves and their student.
Will the guardian need to create an account?
No. When a student is enrolled in a course by their school, a guardian account is created automatically.
Who Provides Support?
The guardian serves as the primary learning coach and is responsible for:
  • Establishing and maintaining a daily learning schedule
  • Ensuring assignments are submitted on time
  • Encouraging student motivation and engagement
  • Communicating with the Michigan Virtual instructor when necessary
Who Provides Support?

The school is the primary support provider. Schools typically:

  • Assign a local mentor who monitors the student’s progress
  • Offer access to additional school resources such as computer labs or tutoring
  • Collaborate with Michigan Virtual teachers to monitor academic performance
  • The guardian may still provide encouragement at home, but the school leads day-to-day academic support and interventions.

Grades and Transcripts
Guardians may view student grades through a Guardian account. Official transcripts are not automatically issued unless requested.

Final grades are submitted to the school and are included on the student’s official school transcript.

  • Login to the Student Learning Portal
    • When a student is enrolled in a course by a school, a guardian account is automatically created if a valid guardian email address is on file. An email containing login credentials will be sent to the guardian to confirm account creation.
      If this email has been received, there is no need for the guardian or the student to create an account. If the email has not been received, the guardian should contact the student’s school and request that the guardian's email address be added to the student’s profile.
      Please do not create a new account.
